Estimation of the area that the mooring rope of a vessel comes into contact with the seabed

In order to accumulate data on the effects of vessel moorings on the marine ecosystem, we estimated the extent of the area to which the mooring rope of a fisheries training vessel comes into contact with the seabed by measuring the depths of various sections of the mooring rope. It was found that the scoured area of the seabed was up to 11,031.9 m2 when the vessel was anchored to a seabed of 25–35 m depth, using a mooring rope 100–125 m in length. Generalized linear mixed model analysis identified wind and currents during the anchorage as having significant effects on the extent of seabed contact in addition to random effects of the location, but wind speed was considered the most influential factor because variations in current speed were relatively small. Stronger wind speed reduces the extent of the area in which the mooring rope comes into contact with the seabed.
