<p>We describe <i>Eudolops martini</i> sp. nov. (Mammalia, Metatheria, Polydolopimorphia, Polydolopidae), coming from middle Eocene levels (Barrancan Age; 39.0—41.7 Ma), south of Gran Barranca in central Patagonia (Argentina). The specimen includes a rostral portion of the skull, an upper first molar, remains of both dentaries (including an almost complete lower dentition), and postcranial remains, which contribute with new information on the morphology, taxonomy, phylogeny, and palaeobiology of representatives of this genus. With an estimated body mass between 2.3 and almost 3.0 kg, species of <i>Eudolops</i> Ameghino 1897 are among the largest known polydolopids, second only to the largest species of <i>Kramadolops</i> Goin, Abello and Chornogubsky 2010. The temporal ranges of the species of both genera suggest that some lineages of Polydolopidae underwent an enlargement in body size concomitant with the progressive cooling of climate conditions by the middle Eocene. The skull of <i>Eudolops martini</i> sp. nov. here studied shows that the species had a short rostrum and extremely large orbits forwardly oriented, a feature shared with several phalangeriform diprotodontians such as the Petauridae, some of them of gliding habits. The progressive opening of forested areas in Patagonia by mid Eocene times argues in favour of such a type of locomotion.</p>
