<p>Here we describe the first record of the family Gomphidae from the Eocene of Messel (Germany), on the basis of the fragment of awing base. It shows strong similarities with the two extant genera <i>Burmagomphus</i> and <i>Heliogomphus</i>, which occur in warm environments of the Indomalayan region. This suggests that the fossil had some affinities with extant genera from this area and living under warm and humid climates. This matches with other insects in the assemblage that also have affinities with humid tropical environments.</p>
