<p>The article is a review of the main morphological and taxonomic features, stratigraphic ranges and diversity dynamics of Famennian pelekysgnathids. Descriptions of 23 species of <i>Pelekysgnathus</i>, including a new species, <i>Pelekysgnathus pazukhini</i>, and the listing of 3 species as <i>Pelekysgnathus</i>? have been made. <i>Pelekysgnathus pazukhini</i> is known from the uppermost Famennian and is one of the latest representatives of the genus. Based on the taxonomic revision, a taxonomic key was developed. <i>Pelekysgnathus</i> species share the ecological specialisation of shallow-water dwellers and can be used for biostratigraphy in the carbonate platform facies. The first appearance data of <i>Pel. talenti</i> and <i>Pel. australis</i> are roughly comparable to the lower boundary of the Famennian, and can therefore be considered as a potentially useful auxiliary tool for its diagnosis. <i>Pelekysgnathus pazukhini</i>, <i>Pel. ornamentalis</i>, <i>Pel. soarae</i>, <i>Pel. firmus</i> and <i>Pel.</i>? <i>guizhouensis</i> can be used as markers to indicate the Devonian–Carboniferous pre-boundary interval, as they are distributed in the uppermost Famennian (Middle <i>expansa</i>–Upper <i>praesulcata</i> (= <i>Bispathodus aculeatus aculeatus</i>-base of <i>Protognathodus kockeli</i>) zonal interval). The diversity of the Famennian pelekysgnathids increased stepwise to a maximum in the Upper <i>marginifera</i> Zone (= <i>Palmatolepis marginifera utahensis</i> Zone) and then gradually decreased throughout the Famennian. These diversity variations are similar to the diversity dynamics of the Famennian conodonts in general. </p>
