A Review of Intelligent Machining Process in CNC Machine Tool Systems

With the widespread adoption of ICT convergence technologies under the paradigm of Industry 4.0, intelligent machining process applications are increasingly being integrated into CNC machine tools. Leveraging a combination of advanced sensors, communication networks, information systems, and computer control technologies, recent developments in IoT, AI/ML, digital twins, and edge/cloud computing are rapidly advancing toward intelligent operation and autonomous control of processes and equipment. As a result, the importance of system architecture and efficient configuration for intelligent applications has grown significantly. In response to these trends, this review paper aims to systematically organize system configurations relevant to intelligent machining processes and propose directions for future research and development. To this end, system configurations are categorized through a comprehensive review of application- and system-level research, representative case studies are analyzed according to configuration type, and key research challenges along with prospective directions in the field of intelligent machining are identified.
