One Step Fabricating Circular and Cross-Section-Variable Soft Microchannel with a Laser Machined TPU Wire
摘要
This paper presents a method for fabricating soft microchannels with variable cross-sections with a TPU wire. The method works by soft-demolding the wire with variable cross-sections from a soft material. For the TPU wire with variable cross-section, it is generated by a so-called hot stretching method followed by laser heating the wire under a stretch/torque force to locally narrow its diameter. It was experimentally found that the diameter of the heated region of the wire can be effectively decreased under the applied force. The diameter of the heated region decreases with the increase in laser power, laser-heating time and the torsion applied to the wire. A Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) channel with a channel diameter ratio (wide: narrow) of 5 was fabricated under a laser power of 3.5 W and a laser speed of 240 mm/s. This technique was further applied for the detection of living algae using a straight PDMS microchannel with a variable cross-section for passive focusing. In addition, the fabricated microchannels were integrated with 3D-printed structures to enable vertical liquid injection.
