Lightweight Design Process Combining Generative Design and Topology Optimization Based on Fusion 360 and ANSYS: A Case Study of a Biped Robot's Arch Component

As an emerging and efficient design method in product development, Generative Design (GD) can achieve diverse designs with given constraints. Similarly, Topology Optimization (TO) is also a design method which is widely used to solve structural optimization problems in engineering. In this paper, by integrating GD and TO into the design process, candidate designs for the arch component of a biped robot are carried out to achieve lightweight. Firstly, the stress of the component is analyzed, and the design constraints are determined. Then, with the help of GD module in Fusion 360, various candidate designs are generated in the defined design space from the perspective of materials and manufacturing methods. Next, the feasibility of the candidate designs is verified, and the TO of structures is further carried out by ANSYS. Finally, from the manufacturing process perspective, the arch's structure is reconstructed, obtaining several feasible candidate designs. Compared to the original design, the obtained candidate designs achieve significant weight reduction and provide designers with new design ideas.
