<p><i>The</i><i>sea</i> cf. <i>pyrrha</i> was recorded in the coastal waters of Mar del Plata, Buenos Aires Province, inhabiting a rocky reef known as Banco Patria at a depth of 26–28&#xa0;m, being the southernmost record of the genus. Some morphological differences in the sclerites and the limited material available mean that the identification of the specimens remains provisional as <i>T.</i> cf. <i>pyrrha</i>. This species was observed forming coral gardens associated with the octocoral <i>Tripalea clavaria</i>, constituting the first ecological and habitat record for <i>T.</i> cf. <i>pyrrha</i> in this region. Coral gardens are of great importance once they harbor a complex associated community of invertebrates and fishes. <i>Thesea pyrrha</i> was recently described from southeast/southern Brazil, with a northernmost record at Rio de Janeiro. The continuous distribution of many octocoral species along the Brazilian and Argentinian coasts may be attributed to the fact that most of these species belong to the Antarctic and Subantarctic fauna. Their larvae are most probably being carried northward by the cold upwelling of the Malvinas current, reaching as far as the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro state (Brazil). Identifying <i>T.</i> cf. <i>pyrrha</i> as a structuring organism of the coral garden adds to its previously unknown ecological importance and drives efforts to continue studying the poorly known mesophotic reefs of the southwestern Atlantic.</p>
