<p>We describe the branchial-parasitic bopyrid isopod <i>Munidion nihonicum</i> <b>sp. nov.</b> from the munidid squat lobster <i>Paramunida belone</i> Macpherson, 1993, collected from 163–182&#xa0;m depth off Amami-Ohshima Island, East China Sea, northwestern Pacific. The parasite resembles <i>Munidion laterale</i> Richardson, 1910 and two species in the closely related genus <i>Pleurocrypta</i> (<i>P. microbranchiata</i> G. O. Sars, 1899 and <i>P. piriformis</i> Bourdon, 1968) but differs from them in the shape of the body, the shape of the maxillipedal palp, the state of lobes on the barbula, and the shape of oostegite 1. The host species of <i>Munidion nihonicum</i> <b>sp. nov.</b> is also different from those of the three similar species: <i>Paramunida belone</i> (Munididae) for <i>M. nihonicum</i> <b>sp. nov.</b>; <i>Paramunida scabra</i> (Henderson, 1885) (Munididae) for <i>M. laterale</i>; <i>Galathea intermedia</i> Liljeborg, 1851 (Galatheidae) for <i>P. microbranchiata</i>; and <i>Galathea strigosa</i> (Linnaeus, 1761) (Galatheidae) for <i>P. piriformis</i>. We determined partial sequences for the 18S rRNA (18S) and 28S rRNA (28S) genes for <i>M. nihonicum</i> <b>sp. nov.</b> and 10 other isopod species, and in some cases also for the cytochrome <i>c</i> oxidase subunit I (COI) gene, and present maximum-likelihood phylogenetic trees for Epicaridea based on 18S and 18S + 28S. In our trees, Pseudioninae was not monophyletic and <i>Pleurocryptella</i> Bonnier, 1900 lies outside a clade containing the other bopyrid taxa, i.e., Bopyridae is not monophyletic.</p>
