An integrative taxonomy approach in studying the biodiversity of intertidal limpets in Taiwan

The present study, based on an integrative approach, identified 26 limpet species in Taiwan, including two undescribed Lottia species, three Scutellastra species, one Patelloida species, one Montfortula species, four Siphonaria species, and a new record, Patelloida ryukyuensis. The present study validated the taxonomic status of Nipponacmea formosa, which is common in Taiwan and mainland China coastline, by comparing it with the holotype specimen and with molecular data support. We found that Cellana grata and C. toreuma in the Indo-Pacific are composed of cryptic species with allopatric southern and northern clades. Lottia dorsuosa from Taiwan formed a single OTU with populations from Hong Kong, southern China, suggesting it belongs to the Tsushima, Ryukyu-China group of the L. dorsuosa cryptic species complex. We found four undescribed Siphonaria species that did not match any current GenBank sequences, adding to the number of Siphonaria species in the Indo-West Pacific to at least 35 species, indicating a high diversity of siphon limpets in the region. We are the first to use a molecular approach to examine intraspecific shell variations in a great number of species covering Patellidae, Nacellidae, and other families. Most of the species exhibit significant variations in the shape and pattern of the dorsal and ventral sides of their shells, even when these limpets share similar DNA sequences. Our results suggest that the identification of limpets should combine morphological and molecular approaches. Accurate identification of intertidal limpets is challenging if based solely on external shell characteristics.
