AHP–GIS-Based Assessment Model for Sustainable Urban Indicators to Preserve Cultural Heritage Using Geomatics Technology

Urban cultural heritage sites worldwide are facing growing threats due to rapid urbanization, socio-economic pressures, and environmental conditions, particularly in historic cities. Preservation of these heritage areas is topmost in maintaining cultural continuity and achieving sustainable development. This paper aims to develop an evaluation method for sustainability indicators to help preserve the Fatimid Cairo heritage areas in Egypt, utilizing geomatics technology. It supports the sustainable development goals promoted by UN-Habitat, with Target 11 being the one for sustainable cities and communities, and a primary target being Target 11.4, which aims to preserve cultural and natural heritage. Through the integration of remote sensing, geographic information systems, and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), the research identifies the most vulnerable locations and develops urban spatial forecasting models that address social, economic, and environmental issues. Using Sentinel-2 satellite imagery, AHP, and ArcGIS, the study analyzes sustainability indicators to produce a map of the most endangered heritage sites. The results reveal locations such as Qasr al-Shouq, Khan Al-Khalili, Ben Al-Sourein, and Al-Gamaleya as recurring hotspots in all the threat scenarios, making them priority areas for intervention. The study offers future-oriented, scenario-based solutions to safeguard these strategic locations, providing insightful direction for future urban growth, renewal planning, and sustainable heritage preservation.
