<p>Most of the research work available in the solar potential analysis on urban building rooftops is performed using aerial imagery or LiDAR data while a few studies exists using satellite data. Existing studies using satellite data does not employ parameters such as trees/vegetation shadow, adjacent higher architectural structures, and dynamic atmospheric conditions in urban areas and are conducted on coarser spatial resolutions. There is scope to assess solar potential over each building rooftop in urban Indian regions using realistic weather data. In this study, an approach to estimate rooftop solar potential in urban area over Indian cities is presented using inputs from high-resolution satellite imagery (0.5&#xa0;cm), a digital elevation model (1&#xa0;m), along with radiation data. Here, solar radiation values are calculated by taking into account the diffusion proportion and transmissivity ratio derived from the IMD ground station data. Our analysis concludes that due to seasonal variations, environmental effects and solar panel structure placement etc., there can be a significant loss of electricity generation up to 50% in realistic conditions as compared to theoretical values. Based on the analysis, it is also concluded that 1&#xa0;m elevation data, high resolution images and environmental parameters serve as a basis for more authentic and accurate results over an urban building structure.</p>
