Retrieval of Cloud Optical Depth from EOS06/OCM-3

Cloud optical depth (COD) serves as a key parameter in comprehending the effects of radiation on Earth's energy balance, cloud formation and development, precipitation patterns, and feedback mechanisms. COD at a spatial resolution of 360 m and 1 km is retrieved using the spectral reflectance data from the Earth Observing Satellite EOS-06 (Oceansat-3)—Ocean Color Monitor-3 (OCM3) at a wavelength of 620 nm. During 2023, six days of cloud-covered data were meticulously pinpointed across the monsoon, post-monsoon, and winter seasons to investigate a wide range of cloud types throughout different seasons, ensuring a significant presence of clouds over both land and oceanic regions. The purpose of the study is to demonstrate the retrieval of COD using satellite reflectance at very high spatial resolution using an Indian satellite. The retrieved COD values were compared with those obtained from Meteosat Second Generation (MSG2). The sensor is performing well within a mean bias error of − 2.63 to 4.55. Additionally, the offset was between ± 7.66, affirming the sensor's reliability and accuracy in COD estimation. Due to the satellite's higher spatial resolution than the currently available platforms, the retrieved COD promises to be invaluable for examining complex and finer details of cloud structures. This data will offer significant insights from a climate perspective, enhancing our understanding of clouds in much more detail.
