Observations of the Anomalous Surface Melt of 2023 Over the Greenland Ice Sheet Using the Ku-band Scatterometer from EOS-06 Mission
摘要
The recent decades of twenty-first century have witnessed an increase in both the frequency and intensity of anomalous and extreme melt episodes over the Greenland ice sheet (GrIS) which, at its most, had even spanned to ~ 98% of the total ice sheet area. This study presents and analyse the observations of such anomalous melt season of the year 2023, primarily using datasets from the Ku-band scatterometer (SCAT-3) on-board EOS-06 (Oceansat-3) satellite. Daily σ0 backscatters and brightness temperature datasets have been utilized to estimate the melt extent, duration, intensity, and onset for both active and passive observations. Comparative analysis with the in-situ measurements from the GC-Net AWSs have shown a significant correlation of EOS-06 parameters with air temperature, surface temperature, and albedo. Observations reveal several episodic melt events occurred prominently during July that made persistent and prolonged melt conditions over GrIS. The five major episodic peak melt days are observed during the study period with the highest melt event on 22nd July that covered ~ 1.08 million km2 (~ 62% of the ice sheet area). The late melt event occurred during the third week of August lasted for a week which spanned to ~ 0.92 million km2 (~ 50% of the ice sheet area). Air temperature and wind observations from ERA-5 also shows anomalous warm conditions, intense wind or cyclonic conditions during the extreme melt days. However, further analysis of the atmospheric effects is needed to better understand the cause of the event.
