Digital Processing and GIS Visualisation of Multi-Beam Echo Sounder (MBES) Data and the Mapping of Submerged Manmade Structures, off Shore Region of Poompuhar/Cauvery Delta, South India

Remote sensing has emerged as one of the proven tools in exploring the Earth, both in on land and ocean areas. Whereas, the remote sensing methods like MBES (Multi Beam Echosounder), Sub Bottom profiler and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicles) based sonar and optical imaging are being widely used around the world, especially in marine archaeological explorations. In order to explore the potential of MBES data in mapping the remnants of the sunken cities, the present study was carried out. Poompuhar was chosen for the study because it was one of the towering port cities in India, established by the Chola dynasty around 2500 years ago at the mouth of the river Cauvery along the east coast of Tamil Nadu and submerged under the Bay of Bengal Sea around 1000 years ago due to marine incursion. The study has brought out the detailed geomorphology and several manmade structures like harbour, dockyards, settlements of different categories and light house at a depth of 30–80 m in the Bay of Bengal Sea, around 30–50 km east of Poompuhar coast / Cauvery delta coast. The paper discusses about the utility of the MBES data and the detection of manmade structures from it and their significance.
