<p>In this contribution, we focus on the knowledge infrastructure that has emerged since the Nota 2000, and on the scientific research carried out within it. We describe developments in the infrastructure and in the research conducted within it, and in the way valorization has been pursued. We complement this retrospective with reflections on how—given all the growth achieved over those forty years—the scientific infrastructure can contribute even more effectively to public health in the future.</p>
