Background <p>Youth health care organizations are faced with a&#xa0;shortage of youth health physicians. The aim of this study was to gain insight into the professional characteristics of the youth health physician and the extent of attractiveness of the profession and to make recommendations for the recruitment and retention of youth health physician.</p> Method <p>A&#xa0;cross-sectional study was conducted with a&#xa0;digital questionnaire on 47&#xa0;general professional aspects. Respondents were asked to what extent they found these professional aspects applicable and attractive. Differences have been examined between the (in)applicability and (in)attractiveness of these aspects and between younger and older youth health physician.</p> Results <p>According to 87&#xa0;youth health physicians (response 56%), the most attractive professional aspects are: working with young patients, preventing illness and communicating. Least attractive were: patients with terminal conditions, stressful and irregular work. Youth health physicians found treatment, combating pain and discomfort, a&#xa0;long-term treatment relationship with a&#xa0;client and managing illness very attractive, but not very applicable to their professional practice. Younger doctors found the use of pharmacotherapy and working in teams more attractive than older ones but did not find this reflected in their profession.</p> Conclusion <p>This research provides insight into the attractive and less attractive aspects of the profession of youth health physician. The results provide guidance for the recruitment and retention of youth health physicians.</p>

Background
