Lionfish on the Plate: Measures to Control the Species Invasion Result in Human Health Risks

This study analyzed 19 elements in 50 invasive lionfish Pterois volitans individuals from three different habitats (natural and artificial reefs and unconsolidated bottoms) along the Northeastern Brazilian Coast. The findings were compared with published data from Caribbean regions, exploring habitat differences in elemental concentrations and assessing health risks regarding exposure to As, Hg, Cd and Pb due to lionfish consumption. The most abundant elements (means, in mg kg−1 w.w.) were Zn (8.81) > Fe (6.16) > As (4.02) > Ti (3.45) > Al (2.46) > Rb (1.08), with all other elements below 0.60 mg kg−1. Among elements in common with other areas from the Caribbean, Brazilian lionfish exhibit the notable prevalence of Al, Cr, Rb, and Ti. Lionfish from natural reefs had higher Hg levels, whereas those from artificial reefs had nearly double the Pb than those from natural reefs and unconsolidated habitats. According to Estimated Daily Intake values, lionfish consumption frequencies should be carefully monitored and reduced to remain within Hg and Pb reference limits, preferably consuming fish caught in unconsolidated bottom environments.
