Bisphenol Analogues Levels in the Follicular Fluid of Chinese Infertile Female Patients: Associations with Serum Hormone Levels and Reproductive Health Outcomes

Bisphenol analogues (BPs), known as endocrine disruptor, may induce reproductive disorders. However, there are limited data on the exposure of bisphenol compounds in follicular fluid. Here, we measured bisphenol A (BPA) and its 11 most common alternatives in follicular fluid samples collected from 407 female infertility patients. BPA, BPBP, BPAP, BPS and BPAF were detected in over 50% of the samples, with median concentrations of 0.19, 0.10, 0.04, 0.02 and 0.01 ng/mL, respectively. BPA was the most important bisphenol compound. We used linear regression models and restricted cubic splines models to analyze the potential relationship between serum hormone concentration and bisphenol compound concentration. We found that BPA and BPAP had an inverted U-shaped relationship with anti-mullerian hormone (AMH) (p for non-linear association < 0.05). BPAP concentration had a significant negative correlation with follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Moreover, BPAP and BPS exhibited an increasing trend with age. The obese individuals have a higher risk of exposure to BPBP and BPAF. This study suggested that age and obesity level may be related to the concentration of bisphenol compounds among different populations, and the increase of BPA may lead to a decrease in the live birth rate.
