Characterization of Naga Cave: Implications for Mutelu Beliefs, Geotourism, Geoconservation, and Geoeducation in Phu Langka National Park, Northeastern Thailand

Naga Cave has emerged as a key destination where geotourism and mutelu tourism converge, drawing visitors with its captivating cultural legends, spiritual value, and remarkable geological features. This study explicitly aims to link geological knowledge with local beliefs and pilgrimage practices in order to explain patterns of geotourism and to derive actionable recommendations for geoeducation and geoconservation. The cave’s renowned serpent-like shapes are formed by the Phu Tok Noi sandstones, whose weathering and fracture patterns give rise to intricate polygonal designs and scale-like textures reminiscent of the Naga, a mythical serpent in Thai tradition. The development of these forms is governed by factors including rock type, mechanical characteristics, temperature fluctuations, and bedding structure, all of which contribute to the cave’s unique appearance. The study highlights the vulnerability of these formations, stressing the necessity of geoconservation to prevent damage from increasing tourism. Guided tours play a role in maintaining visitor safety and preserving these delicate sandstone features while also offering educational opportunities about the cave’s geological and cultural importance. Nonetheless, issues such as vandalism, excessive visitor numbers, and environmental pressures remain ongoing concerns, leading to management strategies like implementing reservation systems and constructing protective barriers. Naga Cave is also an invaluable site for geoeducation, with trails and informational signage that help visitors understand sedimentary processes, cross-bedding, and the local geological context. By connecting geology with biological diversity, botany, and cultural studies, the site encourages a holistic approach to both education and conservation. In conclusion, this study underscores the significance of sustainable tourism and interdisciplinary initiatives in safeguarding Naga Cave—a site of outstanding natural and cultural heritage—for future generations.
