<p>The Kastamonu South Black Sea Geopark (KSBSG) project covers an area of 4,414&#xa0;km² in Northern Anatolia. It represents a significant step toward integrating geological heritage conservation with sustainable rural development. The main theme of the geopark is the “Geological Evolution of the Black Sea,” a back-arc basin that opened during the Late Cretaceous period, and holds global geological importance. The region provides unique onshore evidence of tectonic extension, including deep-sea limestones from the Late Cretaceous and volcanic sequences associated with arc systems. KSBSG is located at the intersection of the İstanbul and Sakarya tectonic zones and features a diverse basement geology with a continuous stratigraphic record spanning from the Carboniferous to the Eocene. Among the most prominent geoheritage sites in Türkiye are the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous karstic platform carbonates, which have given rise to world-class geomorphological formations such as the Valla, Horma, and Çatak canyons, as well as the Ilgarini Cave. The Küre Copper Mine, active since the 14th century, adds a valuable industrial heritage dimension to the geopark. This study presents the initial inventory of geosites and explores the potential of KSBSG to become a UNESCO Global Geopark, thereby promoting international scientific research, education, and geotourism in the Western Black Sea region.</p>
