Quantitative Assessment of Degradation in Rock-Related Sculptures Using an Adapted Fitzner Method for Damage Diagnosis Applied at the UFSM Campus, Southern Brazil

This study proposes a method for assessing weathering-related damage in stone materials, aiming to refine existing quantitative approaches. Based on Fitzner’s methodology, the new approach integrates the ICOMOS classification of weathering forms with Fitzner’s linear and progressive damage indices, enhancing the applicability of the original framework. Fieldwork combines geological, historical, and environmental data within situ observations and digital image processing to quantify weathering intensity. The method allows for a detailed evaluation of deterioration processes affecting sculptures and other stone-based heritage elements. Environmental humidity and exposure time were identified as the main contributors to material degradation. To test the method’s performance, it was applied to seven rock-related sculptures located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Santa Maria (UFSM), in southern Brazil. These sculptures, composed of various lithologies, were analyzed to determine the extent and patterns of physical and chemical weathering. Results confirmed the method’s effectiveness in quantifying damage and supported its relevance as a diagnostic tool for geoconservation efforts in built or ex situ geoheritage contexts.
