Assessment of Rockfall Hazard for Fairy Chimneys; St. Symeon’s Hermitage Valley (Paşabağ-Cappadocia)

The Paşabağ Archaeological Site (St. Symeon’s Hermitage Valley) is one of the most remarkable locations where the formation and evolution of fairy chimneys can be observed in their ideal forms. These unique landforms consist of three distinct sections; cap, neck, and body, each composed of different geological units. Recent observations indicate that a fairy chimney has reached a critical stability threshold, posing a serious risk to visitors if collapse occurs. This study aims to assess the critical stability risks posed by one of these fairy chimneys, which threatens visitor safety due to potential collapse. To evaluate this hazard, two- and three-dimensional numerical modeling and rockfall analyses were conducted. Findings reveal that a portion of the visitor route to St. Simeon Church lies within the rockfall hazard zone, highlighting the need for risk mitigation strategies. However, as the area is included in UNESCO World Heritage Site, mitigation options are limited to non-intrusive solutions. To balance visitor safety with the preservation of natural processes, a sustainable risk reduction approach has been developed. The proposed measures involve the installation of a safety fence and the application of a shock-absorbing material on the southern side of the fairy chimney to dissipate rockfall energy and decrease run-out distance.
