Geoheritage and Geotourism Potential of Andaman and Nicobar Islands: Classical Geosites for Conserving Marine System Outcrop for Education and Outreach

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, located in the Bay of Bengal, are renowned for their pristine natural beauty, rich history, and diverse culture, making them a popular domestic tourist destination. The islands feature six distinct geotectonic units, including the Andaman Trench/Inner Slope, Outer High/Trench Slope Break, Fore Arc Basin, Volcanic Arc, Back Arc Basin, and Mergui Terrace. These regions comprise ophiolite, flysch deposits, and deep-marine sediments, which are easily accessible and offer valuable insights into deep-marine processes. The stratigraphic sequence of the islands encompasses metasedimentaries, an ophiolite complex, the Baratang Group, and the Archipelago Group. The Archipelago Group comprises seven formations, providing well-preserved deep-marine facies for detailed biostratigraphic analysis. These locations are for studying deep marine processes and sedimentation. The Port Blair Turbidites, characterized by excellent exposures, serve as classical examples for studying turbidite deposits. Petrological and sedimentological analyses have been conducted on these turbidites, providing valuable insights into their facies and characteristics. Additionally, the islands offer well-preserved chalk facies with diverse microfossils, presenting an excellent opportunity to study pelagic and hemipelagic sedimentation processes. Thus, it has become essential to preserve and protect Cretaceous sedimentary sequences for teaching and training purposes. We have identified nine major important geoheritage locations that should be preserved for the future. These sites are (1) Mauricedra Beach geosite (b) Panchwati geosites (c) Port Blair geosite (d) Baratang limestone (e) Mud volcanoes (f) Kalapathar geosite (g) Lacam Point (h) Natural rock arc (i) Bharatpur beach. These geosites are well-accessible and have been extensively studied for their geochemical and geochronological analysis, contributing to understanding the islands' geological evolution. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands possess significant geoheritage and geotourism potential, particularly in terms of their deep-marine outcrops. These sites provide valuable opportunities for geological studies, education, and outreach, enabling a better understanding of deep-marine processes and their significance in Earth's history.
