<p>When people view non-human agents as humanlike (i.e., anthropomorphism), they sometimes also ascribe human qualities to those agents. One such quality is trustworthiness. Trustworthiness is theorized to comprise both performance and moral components. Although some researchers have found anthropomorphism facilitates trust, others have failed to establish a significant relationship between anthropomorphism and trust. This study aims to investigate the effects of performance and moral trustworthiness violations, as well as varying levels of anthropomorphized robots (mechanical, ambiguous, humanoid) on trustworthiness perceptions and trust behaviors. Participants (<i>N</i> = 130) were recruited online and participated in a trust game with robot partners. Our results indicate that both types of violations decreased trustworthiness perceptions and behaviors, but performance violations had a greater impact on ability perceptions than moral violations. Although we did not find significant interactions between anthropomorphism and trust violation type, we did observe that anthropomorphism influenced trustworthiness perceptions prior to the violations. Our research supports the idea that trustworthiness comprises both performance and moral components.</p>
