Herpes zoster is the secondary manifestation of an infection with the ubiquitous varicella zoster virus and primarily affects immunocompromised and older individuals. The skin lesions caused by the virus are typically clusters of blisters on a reddened base and affect the skin within the corresponding dermatome, meaning the rash is usually unilateral. While the primary manifestation (chickenpox) in childhood usually resolves quickly without intervention, in cases of herpes zoster treatment with antiviral medications should be initiated early to prevent complications. The primary goal here is preventing postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), a painful nerve irritation where treatment often poses a protracted challenge for patients and healthcare providers. Treatment options for PHN are outlined here. Vaccination against herpes zoster is recommended for immunocompromised individuals and those over the age of 60 years and is available free of charge in Austria since November 2025.
