<p>Germany’s strict data protection regulations can pose issues for researchers in Germany. The new federal government—a&#xa0;coalition of the conservative CDU and the social democratic SPD—has recognised this and its coalition treaty consequently contains several initiatives for simplifying data access and usage. This article briefly presents and contextualises these and identifies other potentially promising approaches.</p>
