<p>Guideline-conform oncologic and palliative care in patients with incurable cancer includes regular care of their informal caregivers. These individuals present with a&#xa0;high psychosocial burden and distress; psychological and physical morbidities; impaired quality of life; and numerous, frequently unmet, support needs. Caring not only for the patients but also for their informal caregiver can improve the informal caregivers’ situation and therefore also stabilize the patients’ care situation. Regular assessment of the informal caregivers’ problems and needs in daily clinical practice is crucial for adequate care. Standardized and validated instruments should be used analogously to patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). The newly developed multidimensional CAREPAL screening questionnaire with concrete recommendations for action is suitable for daily clinical practice. The overall psychosocial burden of informal caregivers can also be assessed using the ZBI‑7, the HPS or the Distress Thermometer.</p>
