<p>Deception, a communication strategy with deep evolutionary roots, is among the most widespread and cognitively demanding forms of interaction observed across species. While often regarded as instinctual, deception involves complex mental processes, suggesting that its use is not merely a reflexive behavior but a sophisticated cognitive tool. This paper explores how deception functions as an adaptive communicative mechanism, emerging as a “cognitive armament” that enhances survival and social cohesion. By examining deception as a semiotic and communicative process, the paper argues that it operates as a “derived function” of language, involving advanced inferential capacities that enable individuals to manipulate the perceptions of others. Across animal and human behavior, deception has evolved to fulfill not only competitive but also prosocial functions, revealing its flexibility as a behavioral strategy. This flexibility reflects an “opportunistic co-optation” of communication systems, allowing species to leverage deceptive tactics within broader social frameworks. Thus, deception can be understood as an evolutionary refinement of communicative capabilities, selectively favored for its role in promoting adaptive outcomes in complex social environments.</p>
