Do Codes Need Interpretation?

The idea that “codes are not sufficient for semiosis” that “codes need interpretation” has been expressed by many biosemioticians and recently it has been summarized by Kalevi Kull in a paper entitled “Codes: Necessary but not Sufficient for Meaning-Making”. Here it is shown that codes do not need interpretation and have been the unique form of semiosis to exist in the first three billion years of the history of life.
