<p>The idea that “<i>codes are not sufficient for semiosis</i>” that “<i>codes need interpretation</i>” has been expressed by many biosemioticians and recently it has been summarized by Kalevi Kull in a paper entitled “<i>Codes: Necessary but not Sufficient for Meaning-Making</i>”. Here it is shown that codes do <i>not</i> need interpretation and have been the unique form of semiosis to exist in the first three billion years of the history of life.</p>

摘要
