The Necessity of Age Stratified Validation of Martin Hopkins Formula: Observations from a Meta-Analysis

Martin Hopkins formula proposed in 2013 uses a varying factor based on the triglyceride and non-HDL cholesterol values, instead of a fixed factor, in calculation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol. The present meta-analysis evaluated the different studies comparing the LDL Cholesterol using Friedewald and Martin Hopkins to assess the average variation between the two across the different studies. We included case-control, cross-sectional, and cohort studies that have compared the LDL Cholesterol levels using Friedewald and Martin Hopkins formulae from the PubMed Database using keywords ‘Calculated LDL’ and ‘Martin’. Thirteen individual studies, out of 21 potentially relevant articles, met the inclusion criteria for the meta-analysis. We observed a statistically significant difference in Calculated LDL cholesterol levels using Friedewald and Martin Hopkins formulae. The Weighted Mean Difference was observed to be as 0.10 (0.052–0.149) mg/dl with a p-value of < 0.001. A variation in the trends was observed between adult and pediatric population when Friedewald formulae and Martin Hopkins formula were used to calculate LDL-Cholesterol. The differing trend in children brings into focus the need of age-specific validation of Martin Hopkins formula before being widely assimilated into clinical practice.
