摘要

This overview article provides information on e‑cigarettes, heat-not-burn products, and nicotine pouches—with a focus on structure and function, distribution within the population, health risks, and legislation. The providid information is intended to raise awareness of this complex topic during patient contact in the field of oral and maxillofacial surgery. These three new tobacco- or nicotine-containing products have so far been introduced into the market primarily through clever marketing with the intention of pretending to minimize or reduce harm in terms of potential health-related damage and dependency-inducing effects. At the same time, longitudinal studies are complicated by the large variety of available products. Adolescents are specifically recruited as new customers, especially for disposable e‑cigarettes and nicotine pouches. Conventional and evidence-based diagnostic and cessation services must be adapted to take account of changing consumption habits. Legal and tax adjustments come into force differently and sometimes with a delay across Europe, and these measures are undermined in their effectiveness by the possibilities of cross-border internet trade.
