<p>Thogotoviruses are tick-borne orthomyxoviruses long overshadowed by influenzaviruses but recently gaining attention due to zoonotic species connected to severe human disease. Their molecular similarity to influenzaviruses and adaptation to arthropod transmission make them a fascinating research subject in innate immunity and virology. Here, we summarize key aspects of thogotovirus biology and highlight the identification of a novel accessory gene product of Dhori virus encoded by a previously overlooked spliced transcript that contributes to viral virulence.</p>
