However, manipulation at this level also entails risks that can originate from particles measuring just a few nanometres in size. The discussion began with criticism of the nanotechnology itself but ultimately ended with the definition of a new discipline within toxicology: nanotoxicology. For 30 years, scientists around the world have been grappling with questions surrounding the toxicology of nanomaterials.</p>
