Clinical Application of Ureteral Stent Placement Without a Push Tube in Urinary Stenting

To explore the safety and efficacy of ureteral stent placement without a push tube in ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URL) and percutaneous nephrolithotripsy (PCNL). Patients with upper urinary tract stones scheduled for URL and PCNL procedures between October 2022 and June 2023 were prospectively recruited. A completely random method was employed to allocate patients to the URL experimental group and control group, as well as the PCNL experimental group and control group. The experimental group used a ureteroscope or nephroscope to assist in pushing the ureteral stent, while the control group used a push tube to push the ureteral stent. Data recorded included the duration of ureteral stent placement, operation time, success rate of stent placement, and complication rates. A total of 185 patients were finally included in the study, with 93 in the URL group and 92 in the PCNL group. The baseline characteristics have no significant difference between the experimental and control groups (all p > 0.05).Compared to the control group, the duration of ureteral stent placement was significantly reduced in the experimental group (URL, p < 0.001; PCNL, p = 0.003). There was no significant difference in operation duration and complication rates between the experimental group and the control group (all p > 0.05). The ureteral stent placement without a push tube offers advantages such as safety, reduces duration of ureteral stent placement, and surgical materials. It is a viable option for ureteral stent placement, particularly beneficial for mini-PCNL.
