The Thriving but Threatened Seagrass Meadows: Reassessing the Status of the Enigmatic Philippine Thalassodendron ciliatum
摘要
The Philippine population of the seagrass Thalassodendron ciliatum is reportedly rare, endangered, and restricted to mid-western Palawan. These assumptions are likely due to intermittent seagrass biodiversity and monitoring studies, limited access to expansive seagrass habitats, and limited taxonomic expertise. A recent reassessment reveals a significantly broader distribution, with confirmed populations across western and southern Palawan and the southern part of Sarangani. Species identity was verified through DNA barcoding of the plastid-encoded rbcL gene, representing the first genetic data for the species within the Philippines. While unconfirmed reports suggest existing populations in Masbate and Tawi-Tawi, comprehensive field surveys are necessary to establish the full geographical extent and ecological health of T. ciliatum in the country.
