<p>Tidal bores are remarkable surges that travel inland in some estuaries on the highest tides and more than&#xa0;twenty occur in the UK, including the Severn Bore, which is one of the world’s highest. For the first time, this paper documents their key estuarine and hydraulic characteristics in a systematic way based on theoretical considerations and previously unreported observations. Results are presented for twenty two tidal bores with the largest reaching heights and celerities of 2–3&#xa0;m and 4–5&#xa0;ms<sup>−1</sup> and travelling distances of 30&#xa0;km or more. Comparisons are also made with observations from tidal bores worldwide and suggestions made for improving understanding of tidal bores in England, Scotland and Wales.</p>
