Seasonal Effects of Hydrometeorological Factors on the Distribution and Partition of Organic Carbon in the Yangtze River Estuary
摘要
The carbon cycling process in coastal areas is shaped by the interactions between land and sea hydrodynamics. Seasonal variations in hydrometeorological factors can have both direct and indirect effects on the distribution and transformation of organic carbon. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of environmental variables on the dynamics of organic carbon, including organic carbon in water (dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC)), and total organic carbon (TOC) in surface sediments. Measurements were conducted at the Yangtze River estuary (YRE) during the wet and dry seasons of 2022 and 2023. The results demonstrated that DOC concentrations were significantly higher during the wet season, while POC and TOC concentrations were elevated in the dry season. Structural equation modeling (SEM) revealed that tidal fluctuations were the primary direct factor influencing DOC concentrations in the wet season, while tides indirectly affected both POC and DOC by modifying water properties in the dry season. Furthermore, regression analysis identified the key influence of monthly average flow (MAF), tidal elevation (TE), water temperature, and dissolved oxygen (DO) on the partition of organic carbon. This study enhances our understanding of how hydrometeorological factors drive organic carbon dynamics in estuarine ecosystems and provides valuable insights for the development of effective carbon management strategies in coastal regions.
