Novelties in Myrceugenia (Myrtaceae) from south and southeastern Brazil

Myrceugenia is a Neotropical genus of Myrtaceae with about 50 species and a disjunct distribution in four areas: central and southern Chile and adjacent Argentina, the Juan Fernandez Islands, the Yungas of southern Bolivia and eastern South America from Bahia in Brazil to Uruguay and Argentina. In Chile it grows from sea level to 1000 m more or less. In this study, we describe a new species, Myrceugenia pyricarpa which is restricted to montane and coastal Atlantic Forest areas of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Extensive herbarium and field work were conducted between 2014 and 2025 to support this taxonomic treatment. The new species is characterised by elliptic, chartaceous to membranous leaves with 18 – 22 pairs of lateral veins, slender terminal branches, orbicular bracteoles, distinct triangular sepals and pyriform fruits covered with glandular trichomes. It differs from M. gertii by its larger and broader leaves, more lateral veins (18 – 22 vs 12 – 14), smaller petals (2.4 vs 6 mm), fewer stamens (50 – 90 vs c. 350) and by having a calyptrate structure instead of free sepals. Compared to M. scutellata, it differs in leaf texture (chartaceous to membranous vs coriaceous), a greater number of lateral veins (18 – 22 vs 10), smaller petals (2.4 vs 5 – 6 mm), fewer stamens (50 – 90 vs 200 – 250) and the presence of glandular pyriform fruits (vs eglandular and ovoid). The species was found at elevations from 900 to 1,840 m and also at sea level in Cananéia, and is provisionally assessed as Vulnerable [VU] due to its restricted distribution and small population size. Additionally, we propose Myrceugenia bocaiuvensis as a new synonym of M. rufescens, based on the absence of consistent distinguishing characters.
