<p>This contribution discusses the spelling of four specific epithets, transcribed from Greek words, of <i>Maytenus</i> (Celastraceae) species from South America, currently combined in <i>Monteverdia</i>. These names have been found in the literature under different spellings. The spellings of the names are discussed under the nomenclatural rules and recommendations, with the indication of the correct ones. <i>Maytenus evonymoides</i>, as originally published, must have its epithet corrected to <i>euonymoides</i> according to Art. 60.6 of the Shenzhen Code. The names originally spelled <i>Maytenus gonoclados</i> and <i>Maytenus dasyclados</i> are correct as published because their epithets are interpreted as compound adjectives, enabling the maintenance of their original Greek terminations instead of their transcriptions to Latin as <i>gonoclada</i> and <i>dasyclada</i>, as found in recent literature. <i>Maytenus erythroxylon</i> is correct as published because its epithet must be interpreted as a noun and not as a compound adjective, and thus maintains its own grammatical gender regardless of the generic name. The spelling of the epithets discussed here must also be maintained in their combinations in <i>Monteverdia</i>, a name grammatically feminine. Typification of the names discussed is provided, and a lectotype of <i>Maytenus dasyclados</i> is selected.</p>
