Lowe’s Epilobium gorgoneum (Onagraceae), reassessment and typification of a long-forgotten name for the flora of the Cabo Verde archipelago
摘要
During the reassessment of the Epilobium hirsutum L. (Onagraceae) species concept in the Cabo Verde archipelago, a critical review of the available literature revealed the name of a species forgotten for over 130 years: E. gorgoneum Lowe ex B.D.Jacks. In this study, the status of this endemic species is reassessed, its original description emended, its geographical distribution modified and circumscribed to the islands of Fogo and Santiago. Additionally, a lectotype conforming to the protologue is proposed. The range of E. hirsutum in the archipelago is now restricted to the island of Santo Antão. Photographs, a comparative table of the morphological features of these two species, and a distribution map are provided.
