Effect of rib deposition on the fatigue performance of conventional Al 6061 T-fillet welds using WAAM

This study investigates the impact of deposited ribs on conventional aluminum(Al 6061) T-fillet weld joints using wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) on fatigue performance. Fatigue tests conducted with 5-ton universal testing machine showed that the addition of ribs improved fatigue life. The conventional joints exhibited an average fatigue life of 165761 (±43106) cycles, while the rib reinforced joints achieved and an average of 482812 (±54173) cycles, corresponding to an approximate 2.9-fold improvement in fatigue life. The rib deposition increased the throat thickness and leg length, reinforcing the weld geometrically and providing resistance to fatigue crack propagation during the part’s service life. It should be noted that some limitations such as the presence of end-crater flaws were observed and could potentially affect fatigue life. Nevertheless, the results demonstrate that industries utilizing T-fillet weld joints can achieve higher fatigue performance by simply adding ribs through arc welding.
