<p>This paper presents a calculation method for transmission efficiency of toroidal involute worm (TI worm) drive, which composed of plastic involute helical gear and steel enveloped hourglass worm. The mathematical model of TI worm drive and the method of load distribution on the contact lines are established. Based on the variation law of lead angle of worm tooth surface and friction coefficient curve obtained from the experiment, the transmission efficiency model is proposed and calculated. The experiment on friction coefficient and efficiency test of samples are studied to verify the feasibility of the efficiency calculation method. Results show that under the experimental conditions, the accuracy of efficiency calculation using modified formula can be improved by more than 2 %. The research will provide a new idea and a set of generalized theoretical models for transmission efficiency of TI worm drive.</p>
