Reviewing Methodological Approaches for Research with Children in the Social Sciences: Strengths, Challenges, and Considerations
摘要
Research with children requires methodological approaches that adequately reflect their developmental, communicative, and contextual realities. This review synthesizes qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-method strategies commonly used in studies involving children, highlighting their strengths, common challenges, and the practical considerations necessary for generating valid and meaningful data. Drawing on existing empirical and conceptual work, the paper argues that combining methods and data sources can enhance the robustness of child-focused research when their application is sensitive to children’s capacities and the conditions under which data are produced. To support this, the paper introduces a contextualized multidimensional triangulation model that encourages researchers to systematically account for the cultural, social, and environmental factors shaping children’s responses. By outlining how such contextual attention can improve interpretation and reduce methodological bias, the paper offers guidance for designing research that is developmentally appropriate, professionally responsible, and analytically transparent.
