<p>University hospitals and other large cardiology departments provide a&#xa0;high-quality advanced medical training based on the high case numbers, rare diseases and the complete spectrum of treatment options. From the perspective of cardiological university hospitals this should remain firmly anchored in internal medicine. Optional further education contents in the form of rotation in cardiac surgery or within a clinician scientist program make a&#xa0;substantial contribution to the understanding of integrative cardiac medicine and mediate relevant further training contents in clinical aspects, science and progress. Therefore, they should be proportionally counted towards the medical specialist training.</p>
