<p><?faz goals-in-body?>Transcatheter treatment of atrioventricular (AV) valve disease has gained substantial clinical relevance in recent years. Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) remains the cornerstone of the diagnostic evaluation for mitral and tricuspid valve diseases. In the older population, functional regurgitation predominates and poses specific imaging challenges. While the mitral valve is typically easily accessible, assessment of the tricuspid valve is often limited due to its anatomical position, limited standardization of quantification methods and high interindividual variability. In patients with valve prostheses, acoustic shadowing and altered flow dynamics further complicate the diagnostics. Accurate quantification requires a&#xa0;multiparametric approach and frequently the use of complementary imaging modalities, such as transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), cardiac computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This review outlines the diagnostic limitations of echocardiography in AV valve disease, with a&#xa0;particular focus on the differences between the mitral and tricuspid valve assessment in the daily clinical practice.</p>
