<p>Long-term mechanical circulatory support systems (predominantly left ventricular assist devices, LVAD) are recommended in the guidelines on the treatment of severely advanced heart failure. The correct indications and adequate patient selection are crucial for successful treatment by an interdisciplinary heart failure team. Therefore, not only the general medical suitability but also the selection and evaluation of the adequate preoperative diagnostics and the appropriate individual selection of the timing and optimal surgical technique of the implantation procedure need to be defined. Furthermore, the evaluation and accompaniment of psychosocial aspects are extremely important for the treatment as a whole. The long-term treatment of the patients beyond the implantation should be ensured by the interdisciplinary VAD treatment team.</p>

Long-term mechanical circulatory support systems (predominantly left ventricular assist devices, LVAD) are recommended in the guidelines on the treatment of severely advanced heart failure. The correct indications and adequate patient selection are crucial for successful treatment by an interdisciplinary heart failure team.
