<p>Anaerobic digestion is a well-established technology for converting organic wastes into renewable energy carriers such as biogas and biomethane. In addition to energy production, the anaerobic digestion process generates a co-product known as “digestate,” which consists of the poorly and non-biodegradable fraction of the input feedstocks. In recent years, increasing attention has been devoted to the development of new digestate valorization pathways, aiming to enhance the environmental and economic performance of industrial biogas plants. This bibliometric review examines the research progress, trends and developments in digestate valorization over the past 25 years. To complement the scientific perspective, patents in the field were also analyzed to provide insight into industrial innovation and to explore the relationship between laboratory research and large-scale application. Scientific publications and patent data were retrieved from the <i>Scopus®</i> and <i>Orbit Intelligence®</i> databases, respectively, and analyzed using <i>VOSviewer®</i> and <i>Rstudio</i>® software. The findings confirm that bibliometric tools are powerful instruments for identifying research gaps, tracking technological trends and supporting the advancement of digestate valorization research and its industrial applications. While digestate is primarily used as a fertilizer or soil amendment in agriculture, a total of 19 processes have been identified as alternative valorization routes, covering the whole spectrum of technological maturity levels, from fundamental and laboratory-scale research (TRLs 1-3), through pilot-scale development and validation (TRLs 4-6) to demonstration and commercially deployed applications (TRLs 7-9).</p> Graphical Abstract <p></p>
