Latent profile and network analysis of parental emotional warmth and prosocial behavior in children

This study employed latent profile analysis (LPA) to identify subgroups based on children’s perceived parental emotional warmth and used network analysis to characterize the structural features and central nodes of children’s prosocial behavior networks within each subgroup, with the aim of informing stratified family education interventions. A total of 1,476 students in Grades 3–6 (Mage = 11.13, SD = 1.37) from two elementary schools in Tangshan and Qian’an, Hebei Province, China participated. Participants completed the Egna Minnen Beträffande Uppfostran (EMBU) and the Prosocial Tendencies Measure (PTM). LPA was conducted to classify subgroups based on children’s perceptions of maternal and paternal warmth. Subsequently, prosocial behavior networks were estimated separately for each subgroup to identify central nodes. Network Comparison Tests (NCT) were used to compare networks and test for invariance in overall network structure, global strength, and expected influence across groups. The robustness of the network models was assessed via non-parametric bootstrapping. Paternal and maternal emotional warmth were significantly and positively associated with children’s prosocial behavior (r = 0.25 and 0.26, respectively; p < 0.01). Four distinct subgroups emerged based on children’s perceptions: Low Parental Warmth (6.4%), High Parental Warmth (57.6%), High Maternal/Low Paternal Warmth (5.6%), and Moderate Parental Warmth (30.4%). Significant between-group differences in total prosocial behavior scores were observed (F = 28.94, p < 0.001). Visualization of the networks revealed subgroup-specific patterns of central nodes: the Low Parental Warmth group exhibited heightened centrality in the Public and Compliant dimensions, the High Parental Warmth group in the Emotional and Urgent dimensions, the High Maternal/Low Paternal Warmth group in the Urgent and Compliant dimensions, and the Moderate Parental Warmth group in the Emotional dimension. NCT results revealed no statistically significant differences in overall network structure or global strength across any pairwise comparisons (all p > 0.05). However, significant local differences in expected influence emerged only for a subset of prosocial behavior items, whereas the centrality of the remaining nodes did not differ significantly across groups. Children perceive distinct configurations of parental emotional warmth, which are concurrently associated with distinct configurations of core dimensions within their prosocial behavior networks. These findings offer empirical insights that may inform the development of stratified, personalized intervention strategies and enhance the relevance and effectiveness of family education guidance.
