<p>Owing to the growing complexity of the real-world challenges that students face in the 21st century, mathematical modeling has become an essential competency in mathematics education systems of many regions. However, the existing research on mathematical modeling competencies lacks an unambiguous evaluation framework, and the theoretical framework (i.e., hybrid approaches) proposed currently lacks verification in terms of the quantitative background. To address these limitations, 388 middle school students in China were selected as participants, based on the existing theoretical research, a framework for the assessment of mathematical modeling competencies based on mixed methods was constructed, and confirmatory factor analysis was applied. Research results showed that a well-fitting framework for the assessment of mathematical modeling competence is based on hybrid approaches and evaluated better than the other two evaluation frameworks. Simultaneously, the global modeling competencies as well as sub-competencies of mathematical modeling are complementary in the evaluation process and can, therefore, be wrapped up in the same dimension in the evaluation framework. Finally, the limitations and implications of the present research are explored.</p>
